Your Choice for Active Release Therapy Calgary!

Evolve Chiropractic & Wellness is pleased to offer Active Release Therapy (ART) to treat overused muscles quickly and effectively. Dr. Ryan Macdonald and his team utilize ART as part of their overall combined treatment philosophy to help you obtain optimal health, wellness, and mobility.

What Is Active Release Therapy?

Active Release Techniques (A.R.T.®) was developed, refined, and patented by P. Michael Leahy, DC, CCSP. It is a state-of-the-art soft tissue system/movement-based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, and nerves by combining manipulation and movement. It involves identifying, isolating, and targeting affected areas to break up scar tissue, which promotes blood flow and faster healing of injuries. ART therapy treats a wide variety of conditions, which most often are a result of overused muscles.

How do Overuse Conditions Occur?

Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) can result in:

  • Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, trauma, etc.),
  • Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, the tension on tendons causes tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped, you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What is Involved in an ART Treatment?

Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The ART provider uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART, and allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each patient. ART is not a cookie-cutter approach.

What Can Active Release Techniques (ART) be used to Treat?

Often the result of overused muscles, the following conditions can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART:

  • Headaches
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Neck pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Tendonitis
  • Shin splints
  • Finger pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica
  • Leg pain
  • TMJ
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Knee problems
